Kaffir lime, scientifically known as Citrus hystrix or Citrus maxima, is a tropical plant belonging to the Rutaceae family that boasts over 600 species. This unique tree can grow up to approximately 6-9 meters in height, bearing fruits resembling round or oval heads measuring around 20 centimeters long. Each fruit contains many segments, ranging from 40 to 80, referred to as seeds or kernels. Their color varies from yellow to orange when unripe, transitioning into a vibrant orange-red hue during ripeness, which usually takes several months.

While commonly used for flavoring food and desserts due to its distinctive aroma, kaffir lime water has recently gained attention for potential health benefits supported by limited scientific research. A preliminary study on hamsters fed high-fat diets found that ethanol extracts of kaffir lime fruit improved hyperlipidemia (abnormal levels of lipids) by reducing total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides, and hepatic lipid accumulation. Additionally, lab studies revealed that kaffir lime fruits contain phenolic compounds and flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Another early investigation involving diabetic rats showed promise for kaffir lime extract's role in decreasing blood sugar elevation and insulin resistance while potentially limiting visceral fat storage.

It should be noted that there is currently no conclusive evidence regarding the safety profile of drinking kaffir lime water or any associated contraindications. However, it's worth mentioning that this beverage typically contains only trace amounts (approximately 0.02%) of essential oils extracted from the flowers through distillation. As such, further human trials are necessary to fully understand the potential therapeutic applications of consuming kaffir lime water regularly. Despite these promising findings, caution must be exercised until more extensive clinical data becomes available.
