PURPOSE OF RESTRAIN

•To protect and prevent injury to patients, stafss and others by providing safe and appropriate use of patient restrain devices

DEFINITION

Restrain is involuntaryu use of physical or mechanical device to limit or restrict movement of the whole or portion of the patient’s body as a means of controlling his or her physical activities

•use if restrain devices hall be limited to those situations where it is clearly for the purpose of preventing harm by the patient to self, where less restrictive methods have been evaluated and have been determined to be unsuccessful.

Shall be applied only for a limited number of times and for specified time limit with doctors order.

•Not use for staff convenience or as a form of punishment

•Orders are limited for 24 hours only, if continued restrain reassessment must be done and with doctor’s order
